My approach to counselling is rooted in the belief that each individual is unique and deserves a tailored therapeutic experience. While my core training is in person-centred therapy, which emphasises empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness, I also draw upon the strengths of other therapeutic modalities to create a comprehensive and effective approach. I integrate elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help clients identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours, fostering practical coping strategies for managing anxiety, depression, and other challenges. Additionally, I incorporate inner child work, which allows for a deeper exploration of past experiences and their impact on present-day functioning. This approach helps clients to heal emotional wounds, develop self-compassion, and cultivate a stronger sense of self. By combining these different therapeutic elements, I create a holistic and personalised approach that addresses the individual's unique needs and goals. I believe in empowering clients to take an active role in their healing journey, providing them with the tools and support they need to create lasting positive change. This integrative model allows for a flexible and adaptable approach, ensuring that therapy is tailored to meet the client where they are, promoting self-awareness, resilience, and overall wellbeing.
Creative therapy, as I practice it, offers a unique and insightful path to emotional exploration for individuals of all ages. While traditional art forms like painting and drawing can be valuable, I frequently incorporate a range of symbolic tools to facilitate deeper self-understanding. Picture and word cards can unlock hidden narratives, allowing us to explore complex emotions through visual and linguistic associations, beneficial for adults seeking deeper self-reflection, children expressing complex feelings, and teens navigating identity. Matryoshka dolls offer a layered approach to understanding inner selves, revealing different aspects of personality and experiences, useful for all ages to explore their internal world. Sandtray work provides a tactile and symbolic landscape for processing emotions and creating external representations of internal states, allowing for safe expression for children who struggle to verbalise, teens exploring social situations, and adults processing past trauma. Crystals can be used as tools for focusing intention and exploring energetic connections, and guided imagery allows us to access and explore inner landscapes, fostering self-awareness and healing, both effective for all ages. This approach is not about artistic skill; it's about using these creative mediums to externalise and explore internal experiences. These tools can facilitate communication, emotional regulation, and self-discovery, providing a gentle and insightful way to process difficult emotions and promote personal growth in adults, children, and teens.
Children's therapy provides a nurturing and supportive environment for children to navigate emotional and behavioural challenges. This specialised approach recognises the unique developmental needs of children and utilises play, art, and other creative activities to facilitate communication and expression. Children often struggle to articulate their feelings verbally, and therapy provides a safe space for them to explore their emotions through play and creative expression. This modality helps children develop coping skills, improve communication, and build self-esteem. Therapists work closely with children and their families to address a range of issues, including anxiety, behavioural problems, emotional difficulties, and trauma. Play therapy, in particular, allows children to express themselves naturally, using toys and games to communicate their inner world. Therapists can observe and interpret children's play, gaining valuable insights into their thoughts and feelings. Children's therapy aims to empower children to understand and manage their emotions, develop healthy relationships, and build resilience. This approach recognises the importance of early intervention in promoting long-term emotional and mental well-being.
Teen therapy offers a confidential and non-judgemental space for adolescents to navigate the complex challenges of adolescence. My specialised approach recognises the unique developmental needs of teenagers, providing a safe and supportive environment for them to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Teenagers often face a range of challenges, including peer pressure, academic stress, family conflict, and identity exploration. Teen therapy helps teens develop self-awareness, build healthy coping mechanisms, and improve communication skills. I work collaboratively with teens to address issues such as anxiety, depression, substance use, and relationship difficulties. This modality emphasises building a strong therapeutic relationship, fostering trust and open communication. I utilise a variety of therapeutic approaches, tailored to the teen's individual needs and preferences. Teen therapy aims to empower teens to develop a strong sense of self, build resilience, and navigate the challenges of adolescence with confidence. This approach recognises the importance of providing teens with the support and guidance they need to thrive, promoting long-term emotional and mental well-being.
Unlock Your Wellbeing with Nature-Based Therapy. I believe in the therapeutic power of the outdoors, and I'm here to help you discover it. For children and teens, I offer engaging creative and sensory activities within the secure green spaces just beside my therapy rooms in Warrington and Carrington. These sessions involve getting stuck in with hands-on exploration, expressing yourselves creatively, and using sensory integration techniques to help with emotional regulation and social skills.
For adults, I can help you reconnect with nature in Cheshire's diverse landscapes through guided ecotherapy sessions. This involves really immersing yourselves mindfully in natural environments, which can help reduce stress, improve your focus, and foster a deeper connection with yourselves and nature. I tailor each session to your individual needs, making sure you have a personalised and impactful experience. It's about finding that bit of peace and clarity we all need, out in the fresh air.
Walk & Talk therapy combines the therapeutic benefits of counselling with the revitalising power of nature, offering a dynamic and engaging approach to personal growth. This modality moves away from the traditional office setting, taking sessions outdoors into natural environments such as parks, trails, or gardens. The rhythmic motion of walking, coupled with the fresh air and natural surroundings, can help to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and enhance overall well-being. The change in environment can create a more relaxed and open atmosphere, fostering a deeper sense of connection between therapist and client. This approach can be particularly beneficial for individuals who find traditional therapy settings restrictive or intimidating. Walk & Talk therapy encourages physical movement, which can release endorphins and improve mood, while also providing a different perspective on personal challenges. The natural environment can act as a metaphor for personal growth and change, allowing for deeper reflection and insight. This modality offers a unique opportunity to integrate physical and emotional well-being, promoting a holistic approach to healing and personal development.
Online therapy offers a flexible and accessible approach to counselling, allowing individuals to access professional support from the comfort and convenience of their own homes. This modality utilises a secure video conferencing platform, providing a virtual face-to-face experience that maintains the therapeutic connection and confidentiality of traditional in-person sessions. Online therapy is particularly beneficial for individuals with busy schedules, limited mobility, or those who prefer the privacy and convenience of virtual sessions. It eliminates the need for travel, making therapy more accessible to those in remote areas or with time constraints. This modality allows for a seamless continuation of therapy, regardless of geographical location. Through the online platform, I can utilise a variety of therapeutic techniques, adapting them to the virtual environment. This includes talk therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and other therapeutic approaches. Online therapy provides a safe and supportive space for individuals to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, fostering personal growth and emotional well-being. This modality ensures that individuals can receive the support they need, regardless of their circumstances, promoting mental health and accessibility.
The Coach House is a cosy, safe room where we can chat, play games, or get creative. Think of it as a comfortable den, a place where you can truly be yourself. It's a space where we can talk about anything that's on your mind.
But what makes this place extra special is the outdoor space. We can use nature as part of our time together, which we call eco-therapy. Imagine exploring the gardens, feeling the grass under your feet, and noticing the trees and flowers. Sometimes, just being outside can help us feel calmer and more connected.
We might take a stroll, have a chat under a tree, or even do some creative activities using natural materials. It's a chance to connect with nature and with ourselves.
The Coach House and its outdoor space are particularly beneficial for:
Children who thrive in a sensory-rich environment: The combination of the cosy indoor space and the natural outdoor setting provides a range of sensory experiences that can be grounding and stimulating.
Neurodiverse children: The flexibility of moving between indoor and outdoor settings allows for sessions tailored to individual sensory needs. The natural environment can provide a calming and predictable sensory input, reducing anxiety. The ability to use natural materials for creative activities can also be very engaging. The option to move, walk, and explore is very beneficial for children who find it hard to sit still. The option to have a session outside, removes the pressure of being in a small room.
Children who benefit from hands-on activities: The opportunity to engage with nature through exploration and creative projects can be highly motivating.
Children who find traditional counselling settings overwhelming: The less formal, more natural setting can be less intimidating and more conducive to open communication.
This space is perfect if you're feeling a bit worried, sad, or if things are a bit tricky at school or home. Maybe you just enjoy being outdoors? Whether we're chatting in the Coach House or exploring the gardens, it's a calm and welcoming space where we can work through things together.
It's a place where you'll feel listened to, understood, and supported, surrounded by the calming influence of nature. I can't wait to see you here!
For older clients, including teenagers and adults, I also offer counselling sessions at Rutherford House in Birchwood, Warrington. This setting provides a professional and confidential space, ideal for those who prefer a traditional counselling room environment.
While Rutherford House doesn't have outdoor space, it offers a calm and focused atmosphere, perfect for in-depth conversations and exploration of complex issues. It's particularly well-suited for individuals who are comfortable with a more structured setting.
Although primarily a room-based environment, I still incorporate creative and play therapy techniques where appropriate. For younger clients who are able to manage a counselling room setting, and for teenagers and adults, this can involve using art materials, therapeutic games, and other creative tools to facilitate self-expression and understanding.
Rutherford House offers a safe and private space where we can work together to address your concerns and achieve your goals. It's a place where you can feel heard and supported, and where we can collaborate on your journey towards well-being.
This location is particularly suitable for:
• Teenagers navigating the challenges of adolescence.
• Adults seeking support for personal or professional issues.
• Children who are comfortable within a counselling room setting and can benefit from focused therapeutic work.
I look forward to welcoming you to Rutherford House and providing a supportive and effective counselling experience.
